We provide materials that are relevant, accurate, and seek to empower our children.  We often see schools use outdated textbooks and materials that glorify some events and omit others. We will create and provide families with resources that grow our children’s confidence.

We will provide direct support to parents so they can teach their children about their rich history.

 

Professional Development

We create specialized continuing education programs to address the needs of teachers and their student communities.

She suggested they write a letter to a young girl in their life, as USA Today’s Dylan Wells reported in a tweet. Warnock addressed his to his daughter Chloé. It reads in full: "Today we confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson to the United States Supreme Court. In our nation's history, she is the first Supreme Court Justice who looks like you - with hair like yours. While we were voting on the floor of the Senate, a friend of mine, the Vice President of the United States, handed me this piece of paper and suggested I write a note to someone who comes to mind. By the way, she is the first Vice President who also looks like you. So I write this to say you can be anything, achieve anything you set your head and heart to do. Love you, Dad."

BHFK honors the legacy of South Carolina educator and activist Septima Clark who believed “literacy means liberation.” She risked her life fighting against job discrimination and equal pay for black teachers. Clark lost her teaching position, four years shy of retirement, for refusing to renounce her membership in the NAACP. She later helped found the Citizenship School program to teach participants how to lead literacy and citizenship workshops to help Black people pass voter registration tests. Over 800 schools were created around the country and its work led to the formation of the Voter Education Project.✨
